Simon Recommends: Anne, a middle aged woman, feels that she has bettered herself by moving away from her home town. She has attended University, married a successful surgeon, and has little contact with her mother Jean. Superficially, she may appear to have done well, but she isn’t happy. Her two sons are spoilt, unappreciative, and treat her in an offhand manner.
Her life changes when she receives a phone call telling her that her mother has been knocked down and is seriously ill in a coma. She travels to be by her bedside.
The story alternates between Jean’s recollections of events from her life as she lies on a coma, and moves into the present day, as Anne struggles with her own memories of her past.
A great read, and a quite moving story.
