At just under two hundred pages, this is a short book, and it is possible to finish it in a couple of sessions. It tells the story of a young magician, his assistant Evie and the compere Jack, who work together in a Variety show on Brighton Pier in the late 1950s.
The story moves backwards and forwards in time, and weaves the story of their interconnected lives into an elaborate and fascinating narrative. There are some surprises along the way, and the characters are given real depth as we learn more about their pasts, motivations and aspirations.
Although short, this is a great read, and I was sorry when I finished it!
