Adeyemi is a Nigerian writer of Young Adult Science fiction. Children of Blood and Bone is the first volume of a projected trilogy which can be best seen as a cross between Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia and Yoruba gods. It is set in a universe where magic, bestowed by Yoruba deities, has been suppressed and its users called Maji are oppressed. It follows a young girl called Zélie Adebola, who is descended from Maji, and her quest to restore magic to the world.
Adeyemi follows writers such as Samuel Delany and Octavia Butler, among other leading figures of the movement known as Afrofuturism, who have worked African traditions into their prize-winning science fiction and fantasy.
