George Bowling is a middle-aged insurance salesman who lives a suburban existence in London with his wife and two children. He is keen to return to Lower Binfield - the village where he was brought up. He has fond memories of his childhood and when the opportunity to take a short break there presents itself, he sets off. All is not as he remembers it ….
Published in 1939 it portrays a pre-war England on the verge of irreversible change. There is a real tension in the book as George’s nostalgic memories of times past are shattered.
A fairly short book, but a really interesting read.
